BPI 2018 CHAMPIONS OF THE PUBLIC INTEREST

KHALIL GIBRAN MUHAMMAD
Keynote Speaker

Dr. Muhammad is Professor of History, Race and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and former Director of the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. His work focuses on the intersections of race, democracy, inequality and criminal justice. Dr. Muhammad’s award-winning book, The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America, has been called “the most significant work in the study of race and American society to have appeared in the past decade.”

JADINE CHOU

As Chicago Public Schools Chief Safety and Security Officer for the past seven years, Jadine Chou oversees safety operations for more than 380,000 students. She has been called “an advocate at the city level for involving youth voice in decision making and an advocate of restorative practices in schools to increase both safety and student retention.” A community leader aptly sums up Jadine’s commitment: “I don’t know anyone who loves children more than Jadine Chou.”

EVELYN DIAZ

Evelyn Diaz’s entire career has been in service of social justice. As President of Heartland Alliance, a global anti-poverty and human rights organization, she oversees efforts to provide services to nearly a half million people annually in healthcare, housing, human services, and justice. Evelyn was named 2014 Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers and received the Chicago Women in Philanthropy’s 2016 Making a Difference Award.
