Meet Ashton Hoselton, BPI’s Newest Polikoff-Gautreaux Fellow

Hometown: Waukegan, IL

Education: JD 2019, Georgetown University Law Center, BA in Neuropsychology and Holistic Healing, Pitzer College, one of the Claremont Colleges

Why BPI: BPI’s versatility and commitment to the constantly evolving issues of social justice drew me to the organization. I believe two key factors are imperative to building and advancing good policy: (1) an ability to shift strategies and priorities and (2) a commitment to centering community member voices. It was made clear to me through discussions with BPI directors and staff that both of these factors are valued at BPI, and the work done reflects that. It is my privilege to join the team advocating for policy that truly serves those it affects rather than political interests. 

What she’s working on: Legal and policy issues related to higher education in prisons, housing for justice-involved individuals, and other legislative initiatives that combat mass incarceration. 

Next steps: Hopefully, prison abolition

Fun fact: I backpacked nearly 2,500 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail, from Canada to Mexico, before starting my job at BPI.
