BPI’s Alex Polikoff Quoted in The Atlantic

The AtlanticIn her latest article for The Atlantic, writer Alana Semuels poses the question, “Is Ending Segregation the Key to Ending Poverty?”  In seeking an answer, Semuels discusses the history and outcomes of the Gautreaux mobility program and the implications of Moving to Opportunity.  She also addresses current mobility efforts, notably a settlement reached between BPI and CHA on January 29 that calls for an extensive rehab of community facilities at Altgeld Gardens and a new mobility program to match the 218 residential units to be rehabilitated at Altgeld with the same number in strong neighborhoods throughout Chicago.

BPI’s Director of Public Housing and Senior Staff Counsel Alexander Polikoff is featured in The Atlantic story, making the case for continuing to use mobility programs as a way to address the deleterious effects of segregated housing.  Alex is quoted extensively in the article and emphasizes BPI’s belief in the ability of Gautreaux-style mobility programs to offer children living in racially segregated, high-poverty neighborhoods a chance for better life opportunities.
