Fun fact about yourself I once went to Confession to the Pope (Pope John Paul in 1984). My son celebrated his first reconciliation this past weekend, and when I told him that story he wasn’t so nervous about confessing to “Father Steve.”

What is your favorite memory of your time spent at BPI? I have such great memories of the people I worked with and met during my time at BPI. I will never forget driving around Chicago in a U-Haul van with architectural models of small schools in the back of the truck with Jamie Hendrickson and laughing hysterically at my lack of urban truck driving skills. I got to see lots of Chicago and meet and work with a diverse group of people in communities throughout the city. BPI expanded my horizons and taught me a lot about myself.

What motivates you to keep working in the public interest? To me, law is a helping profession, as much as medicine or social work. It’s the clients I work with who motivate me: people whose lives I interact with and who trust me during their difficult times. I’ve learned a lot from my clients, and their struggles constantly remind me not to take my life or circumstances for granted.

What advice would you give to the next generation of public interest lawyers and policy makers? Follow your heart. Do what you love and are passionate about. Success will follow.
