Chief Finance and Operations Officer

BPI seeks an experienced Chief Finance and Operations Officer with excellent people skills, business acumen, and an exemplary work ethic. The Chief Finance and Operations Officer directly support the Executive Director on all financial and operations matters. The Chief Finance and Operations Officer is responsible for reporting and financial management and information technology services and works with the Administrative Director to oversee operations and human resource matters. The Chief Finance and Operations Officer will refine and enhance current systems with the intent to maximize efficiency and effectiveness throughout the organization and will inspire and drive the development and creation of new protocols, processes, and procedures in areas where such development is needed.
A competitive salary is commensurate with experience.


  • Responsible for reporting and financial management; information technology; and, in partnership with the Administrative Director, operations and human resource matters;

Financial Management

  • Perform all of BPI’s financial operations and day-to-day financial reporting functions, including accounting, budgeting, internal control systems, and auditing, tax, and financial grants management;
  • Manage cash flow to ensure adequate funds to cover A/P and payroll. Manage bank, auditor, and tax relationships. Perform budget and financial planning functions. Perform accounting functions. Ensure timely and accurate financial and regulatory reporting.
  • Responsible for all BPI accounting functions, including processing payables and receivables and other business office support. Perform all routine accounting procedures such as oversight of general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, bank reconciliations, cash management, and reporting utilizing Quickbooks;
  • Process payroll with a third-party payroll provider;
  • Partner with development staff to provide financial information necessary for grant writing and monitoring;
  • Oversee the annual audit process. Oversee the preparation and issuance of BPI’s federal 990 return and other state return requirements;
  • Collaborate with investment portfolio managers to ensure that assets of BPI are managed in compliance with all standards and policies for board designated, donor-restricted, and reserve funds management;
  • Ensures the highest levels of fiscal management, governances, and transparency;

Information Technology

  • Ensures Information Technology is adequate and operating effectively and efficiently to meet BPI’s needs;
  • Supervises data and technology as well as project management and systems improvements;
  • Manages relationships with third-party information technology providers;
  • Oversees Information Technology projects, including procuring equipment and applications as needed;


  • Works in partnership with Administrative Director to ensure BPI’s operations are mission-aligned and vision focused;
  • Ensures that all aspects of BPI’s operations support equity and inclusion principles;
  • Serves as a strategic and trusted thought partner to deliberate ideas in an agile environment;
  • • Develops relationships across the nonprofit sector to share and learn best practices;

Human Resources

  • In partnership with the Administrative Director, manage the human resources functions of BPI, including maintaining a fair and positive work environment for all employees and setting the tone for a collaborative work environment that promotes a culture of respect;
  • Directs recruitment activities; prepares and maintains job descriptions and personnel files; oversees performance management, employee training, and development; ensures compliance with law and regulations;
  • Develops, reviews, and maintains personnel policies as needed; and
  • Participates directly in all benefits plan administration including rate negotiation and term lengths.


  • Eight to 10 years’ experience in financial and operational management;
  • Experience in managing the following functions: financial management, Information Technology, operations, and human resources;
  • Exceptional technology skills, including proficiency in accounting software (preferably Quickbooks); Word; Excel; PowerPoint, SharePoint, Salesforce, and others;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: collegial, collaborative, energetic, able to develop productive relationships with colleagues, consultants, vendors, and others who contribute to the effective and efficient functioning of operations and administration;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the BPI values of equity, diversity, and inclusion, personally and in previous leadership positions; willingness and ability to be a leader in this work;
  • An enterprising mindset and a passion for social justice and BPI’s mission;
  • The acumen and finesse to handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities, mixing long-term projects with the urgency of immediate demands;
  • Experience engaging in creative problem solving and taking initiative, while utilizing a solutions-oriented approach and exhibiting flexibility and good judgement;
  • Experience in managing audit and tax engagements with third-party CPA firm;
  • Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles including audit and accounting in nonprofit organizations;
  • Previous experience at a non-profit organization highly desirable; and
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business required (preferably finance or accounting); MBA or CPA preferred.

Senior Counsel

BPI seeks an experienced attorney with a passion for social justice to join our staff as Senior Counsel. This mid-level or senior attorney will develop and conduct advocacy and, as appropriate, litigation, in areas that advance social justice, including criminal justice reform. This attorney will take a lead role in advocacy and litigation and will provide organizational leadership and management oversight for the organization. This is an exciting opportunity to provide vision, leadership, and support in BPI’s growing criminal justice reform work, as well as across the range of issues that BPI works to address. A competitive salary is commensurate with experience.


  • Conduct legal advocacy, including counseling advocates, community members, and policymakers; drafting and reviewing legislation; and, where appropriate, litigating in federal and state courts;
  • Identify, develop, and implement policy strategies consistent with BPI’s program areas including educating policymakers, agency officials, stakeholders and the general public about the need for reforms to address issues and propose solid recommendations for change;
  • Provide guidance and active supervision to attorneys, program associates, interns and volunteers to ensure they have the skills and tools necessary to advance BPI’s work;
  • Provide strategic leadership in BPI’s program areas by providing program direction and contributing to the development and implementation of strategies, plans, and goals;
  • Build and/or participate in coalitions, partnerships and task forces working to advance BPI’s program areas;
  • Serve as an ambassador for BPI, building and sustaining external relationships;
  • Contribute to the effective administration of the organization, including participation in recruitment and hiring and working with communications, research, and development professionals;
  • Exemplify BPI’s core values and advance BPI’s vision in all aspects of our work; and
  • Travel in Chicagoland, Illinois, and to national conferences and meetings as needed.


  • Seven or more years of experience in public interest law or policy advocacy;
  • An enterprising mindset, a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a passion for social justice and BPI’s mission;
  • Top-notch research, writing, and public speaking skills, including an ability to succinctly translate complex policy and legal concepts into information understandable by legislative, media, political, legal, and public audiences;
  • Excellent analytic and strategic skill;
  • An ability to work effectively in a team-based and deadline-driven environment;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sound judgment, including the ability to work with diverse constituencies both inside and outside the organization;
  • An ability to develop and manage strong relationships and partnerships with coalitions of organizations, community members/leaders, and public officials;
  • Experience in managing diverse teams comprising attorneys, communications experts, and/or community organizers;
  • Experience in successfully handling complex litigation and an ability to assume significant leadership in litigation;
  • Experience engaging in creative problem solving and taking initiative, while utilizing a solutions-oriented approach and exhibiting flexibility and good judgement;
  • Ability to travel;
  • Multilingual skills are a plus, but not required; and
  • Juris Doctor degree and admission to the Illinois Bar.
