Affordable housing — Chicago Regional and Local Policy Initiatives —AFFORDABLE HOUSING TOOLS IN ACTION

BPI works to provide local leaders throughout the region with the tools they need to create and preserve affordable housing.  We have worked closely with counties, municipalities and community groupsto create and implement local affordable housing policies.  We have provided assistance to cities and suburbs large and small, and to communities that are mostly developed as well as those that still have a great deal of growth potential.  Our goal has always been to develop programs that are well-suited to local needs and opportunities.

When working with local leaders, we can provide a broad range of services.  We assess local housing needs and trends, make presentations to relevant groups in order to increase understanding about affordable housing issues and policy, conduct research on best practices from around the country, lay out a variety of policy options, meet with stakeholders to explore all of the policy options, then develop more fully the policy alternatives that have the greatest local support.  Then we work closely with local officials to refine the policy proposals and develop supporting materials.  When requested, we draft legislation, legal memos and fact sheets.
