Public Housing — Chicago's Public Housing Transformation — future outlook

Now at the midpoint of the 15-year Plan For Transformation, far more than half of all planned construction remains to be done in the family developments.  While most planned demolition has been completed, some 77% of planned mixed-income units are yet to be built, and land acquisition and funding issues are still to be resolved.  At some public housing sites development planning has barely begun, and important threshold issues remain to be addressed.  The same is true at several of the larger sites planned for rehabilitation.

In addition, as a growing number of relocated public housing families confronts the requirements for re-entry to the new mixed-income developments, heightened attention to pre- and post-move social services for relocating families will be necessary.  At many mixed-income sites "community building" issues — economic development, provision of neighborhood facilities such as schools, parks, and community centers, and questions of resident governance and representation — are only just beginning to be addressed.

BPI will continue to serve on Working Groups overseeing redevelopment efforts and to address overarching development, social service, and relocation issues during the second half of the Plan for Transformation.
